Giving Is Good!
Last I wrote, I announced that I'd be selecting a different Chicago area music program monthly to receive a donation totaling 10% of all Bash Beats proceeds for that month. I am extremely happy to report that I have selected my first music program and delivered the very first check of my "Music on a Mission" initiative!
The first program is near and dear to my heart to say the least. Walter L. Newberry Math and Science Academy states that their mission is to "Cultivate a positive, safe and academically rigorous environment that develops the whole person and empowers students to thrive as leaders". This school has educated my two children (Gavin 5th grade and Aubrey 3rd grade), and invited my family and I to picnics, dances, field trips and various in school and after school activities.
Like most Chicago area schools, many of these activities are not covered by city funding alone, but also depend on donations from families, fundraisers and the local community. Without these donations, not only would activities like these not be possible, but many much needed materials for students would not be available.
The music program at Newberry services all students in grades Pre-K through 8th, and covers a wide range of topics/activities. Students learn music appreciation through song, movement, performing on instruments, music notation and video. While primary grades focus more on singing, notation and movement activities, intermediate/upper grades focus more on integrating notation and current musical trends into classroom-based performances.
